Cilantro Taqueria Employees Apprehended by ICE?

CLEVELAND - According to Geauga county Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand, the county is currently holding around 58 detainees from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a sharp increase from around 20 just last week. According to WTOL11, at least six of these detainees are employees of Cilantro Taqueria, a restaurant located in Cleveland with locations in the surrounding area, including Chesterland.
The confirmation of the Cilantro Taqueria employees was verified by restaurant co-owner Sandro Galindo. According to the report, the employees were taken into custody on Sunday and city of Cleveland officials were not notified of the raid.
"I can say that we were not informed ahead of time of this operation. We were not provided information by the federal government either prior to or subsequent to this taking place. We are still working to get confirmation of exactly what happened," Mayor Kahlil Seren said.
ICE is currently focused on arresting those who are in the country illegal and that may have committed a violent crime since entering. Trump administration Border Czar Tom Homan has stated that the only individuals currently being arrested are public threats to safety. It is not known why the 6 individuals from Cilantro were detained.
'I don't think we've arrested any families. We've arrested public safety threats and national security threats, bottom-line,' he said.
Detainees are currently being held in Chardon. The move comes as the Trump administration has moved swiftly since taking office to move on mass deportations across the country, leading to consternation among Hollywood celebrities and businesses and nonprofits that employ illegal immigrants. Joe Cimperman, a former City of Cleveland Council Member and current CEO of Global Cleveland, a nonprofit that facilitates immigrant labor into the northeast Ohio region, voiced concern over the move to restore law and order to the region.
"My hope is that as these announcements continue and as the executive orders continue, that regular people who haven't been paying attention to the positive effect that immigrants play in places like Northeast Ohio will pay attention," Cimperman said.
Economic and fiscal studies have long evaluated and upheld that mass immigration impacts native workforce wages by suppressing salaries and preventing unionization. Illegal immigration is known to create a net fiscal drain on government spending and subsidies.
It is expected deportation raids will continue as ICE works through a backlog of known illegal immigrants throughout the country that the previous administration failed to act on.
